Chinese taupe, russet, white and mottled jade carving of two recumbent cranes, each nuzzling the other and both holding a gnarled fruiting peach branch in their mouths, the long leaves reaching down the back of the darker crane, the stone of the pebble revealing the russet edge, the claws neatly tucked underneath and detailed work to the feathers.

3 ¼ inches, 8.3 cm long.

Qianlong, circa 1750.

Wood stand.

Provenance & Additional Information

  • From the collection of Joseph Shapiro (1938-2005) and Bella Shapiro (1941-2011) and thence by descent.
  • This river pebble has been cleverly and skillfully rendered. It is also charming how the cranes are nuzzling each other while the space beneath is openwork. The craftsman has left the russet edge of the natural stone visible, adding to the wonderful tactile nature of this piece.
