Description
Chinese imperial porcelain famille rose, fencai, “over the wall” bowl and cover, all painted with fruiting lychee branches and buds, around the sides and continuing over the rim, with sprays of bamboo and a butterfly, hovering on the interior and exterior.
Diameter 4 3/8 inches, 11.1 cm.
The base and cover with six-character seal mark of Daoguang and of the period, 1821-1850.
Condition
Overall excellent condition, with a scratch to the body of the interior of the bowl which fluoresces under the UV light but does not go through.
Provenance & Additional Information
- From a private Swedish collection, purchased during the early 20th century.
- A near identical pair was included by Marchant in their exhibition of Nineteenth Century Mark and Period Porcelain, 1991, no. 45, p. 47; another pair was sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong in their auction of The Edward T. Chow Collection, Part I, Ming and Qing Porcelain, 25th November 1980, lot 170, pp. 156/7.

Chinese imperial porcelain blue and white palace bowl, wan, deeply potted with a gently flared rim, the exterior with five stylised lotus flowerheads on a scrolling branch, amongst arrow-head leaves, scrolls and foliage, all above a band of stylized lotus petals, the interior painted in the well with a lotus flowerhead amongst arrow-head leaves, scrolling branches and foliage encircled by five further flowerheads in the cavetto.
7 1/2 inches, 19.1 cm diameter.
The base with a six-character mark of Kangxi within a double ring and of the period, circa 1690.
