Description
Chinese imperial porcelain doucai enamelled lotus and chrysanthemum jar finely potted on the body with a broad shoulder and short cylindrical neck, painted on the exterior with eight medallions of yellow and iron-red chrysanthemum blooms between eight lotus blossoms on curling branches, all between two bands of ruyi heads on the neck and foot.
11.5 cm, 4 ½ inches high.
The base with a six-character sealmark of Qianlong in underglaze blue and of the period, 1736-1795.

- This type of doucai chrysanthemum jar is believed to be modelled after Chenghua, Ming dynasty prototypes. No exact Chenghua original appears to be recorded, however the design is well-known from Chenghua bowls; see a doucai bowl excavated from the waste heaps of the Ming imperial kilns at Jingdezhen included in the exhibition, A Legacy of Chenghua, The Tsui Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1993, cat. no. C119. Compare also a Chenghua jar and cover with a related design in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Zhongguo meishu quanji. Gongyi meishu bian: Taoci [Complete series on Chinese art. Arts and crafts section: Ceramics], Shanghai, 1988-91, vol. 3, pl. 96.

A similar jar and cover from an old Japanese collection was sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong in their auction of Important Chinese Works of Art, 7th April 2015, lot 3713, total price realised HKD 2,000,000; another pair with covers was sold by Christie’s Hong Kong in their auction of Imperial Chinese Porcelain: Treasures from a Distinguished American Collection, 27th November 2013, lot 3029, total price realised HKD 6,040,000. - Included by Marchant in a full page advert of CANS year book 2018.
