Description

Chinese biscuit porcelain turquoise glazed water-dropper in the form of a seated monkey holding a gourd, his body carved with hairwork and sitting on a rockwork base.

2 ¾ inches, 7 cm high.

Kangxi, 1662-1722.

Wood stand.

  • From an important French private collection formed between 1924 and 1941.
  • Purchased from Pierre Saqué, 12 Avenue George V, Paris, 3rd April 1929.
  • A similar pair from Wannieck, Paris was sold by Sotheby’s Monaco in their auction of Importante Collection de la Compagnie des Indes et Porcelaine de Chine, 9th February 1981, lot 922, p. 16; another was sold by Sotheby’s Monaco in their auction of Belle Collection de Porcelaines de Chine et Objets d’Art Chinois, 23rd June 1985, lot 501.
