Description
Pair of Chinese porcelain blue and white and coloured enamel, ko-akai, small deep dishes, each fluted with a scalloped rim, painted in the centre with large branches of bamboo amongst pierced rock work in a pond, with plum blossom in yellow and iron-red, all beneath green leaves and aubergine branches, with two birds in flight beneath the sun and swirling clouds, with a brown washed rim, each underside with three leaves in underglaze blue.
The bases with six-character marks of Chenghua within a double ring.
5 ¾ inches, 14.6 cm diameter.

A related pair of similar shape and size, painted with a hare beneath a bird in flight were included by Marchant in their exhibition of Transitional Wares for the Japanese and Domestic Markets, 1989, no. 100, pp. 56/7.
Condition
One with small inner rim nibble, the other with natural shrinkage.
