Chinese iron-splashed black glazed ‘partridge feather’ temmoku teabowl of conical form with gently everted rim, covered on the interior with a lustrous black glaze streaked and splashed in iron-rust beneath the similarly coloured rim, the exterior covered in an iron-rust semi-matt glaze falling short of the knife-cut buff coloured stoneware body revealed at the short foot rim.

or brown glaze usually has a matt texture, and the black glaze is very shiny with a bluish tinge. This is the northern version of the ‘hare’s fur’ glaze of the Fujian potters and, during the Song dynasty, was associated with the cult of tea drinking’; a further similar bowl was included by J. J. Lally & Co. in their exhibition of Song Dynasty Ceramics, The Ronald W. Longsdorf Collection, 2013, no. 57, where it notes, ‘Similarly glazed tea bowls of this form excavated from the Northern Song stratum of the Cizhou kiln site at Guantai, Cixian, Hebei province are illustrated in the excavation report, Guantai Cizhou Yaozhi (The Cizhou Kiln Site at Guantai), Beijing, 1997, pl. 65-1, with line drawings illustrating the profile of the distinctive shape on p. 268.’
