Description
Chinese imperial porcelain blue and white deep circular dish, the well of the centre painted in reverse technique with a boy holding a branch of peony flowers amongst stylised scrolling foliage on a blue ground roundel under a band of blossoms and stylised scrolls, the exterior painted with flower branches.
6 1/4 inches, 15.9 cm diameter.
The base with a six-character mark of Kangxi within a double ring in underglaze blue and of the period, 1662-1722, circa 1680.
Provenance & Additional Information
- Formerly in the collection of Tang Shaoyi (1862-1938), the first prime minister of the Republic of China, and thence by descent.
- Included by Marchant in their exhibition of Qing Porcelain from Three Private Collections, 2019, no. 3, pp. 14-15.
- A similarly decorated dish, also Kangxi mark and of the period, from the collection of Mr. P.J. Donnelly, was included by Sir Harry Garner, John Ayers and Soame Jenyns in The Arts of Ch’ing Dynasty, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, vol. 35, 1963-64, no. 98, pl. 39, p. 56.
- A similarly decorated bowl, Kangxi mark and of the period, was included by Marchant in their exhibition of The Bertil J. Högström Collection, Kangxi Blue and White Porcelain (1662-1722), 2011, no. 9, pp. 20/1.

A Chinese imperial porcelain blue and white small saucer dish, painted in the centre in luminous vivid tones, with three scaled mythical animals including a qilin, a monkey headed qilin and an elephant headed animal, together with a tiger and a dragon emerging from rockwork beneath ruyi clouds, with a pine branch, other plants, rockwork and flowerheads, encircled with a continuous border of a lotus pound with pairs of geese, ducks, cranes and other birds amongst lotus flowers, leaves, arrow heads and aquatic leaves, the underside with six branches of pomegranate, hibiscus, persimmon, morning glory, peach and another flowering branch. Japanese wood box.
The base with a six character mark of Wanli within a double ring and of the period, 1573-1619.
