Chinese porcelain blue and white circular plate with slightly everted rim, painted in the centre with a scene from the Romance of the Western Chamber, within a double ring, the rim with four panels, each of three peaches, reserved on a diaper ground, the underside with two mountainous river scenes, the base with a six character mark of Kangxi within a double ring and of the period, 1662-1722.
8 1/4 inches, 21 cm diameter.
*The scene is described by Christiaan J.A. Jörg in Famille Verte, Chinese Porcelain in Green Enamels, p. 100, as “Scene 14, (book 4), Zhang, on his knees, asks Hongniang to take his love letter to her mistress. To depict a male, a future scholar, begging to a (seated!) maid was a reversal of the social codes and underscores the importance of Hongniang in the play”.
