A Chinese porcelain famille verte hexagonal puzzle ewer and cover, painted on the body with panels of mythological animals between branches of flowering plants between bands of flowers, precious objects, scrolls and diaper bands, all on a pedestal foot with precious objects repeated on the cover.

9 1/4 inches, 23.5 cm high.

Kangxi 1671-1722.

Condition: crack around spout and small chip.

  • Formerly in an American private collection.
  • Two similar ewers are illustrated by E. Gorer & J. F. Blacker in Chinese Porcelains and Hard Stones, Volume I, London, 1911, pl.135, where they are referred to as ‘puzzle pots’, and the entry describes how the wine passes through handle to the spout to bypass the open work decoration on the neck.
