Description
Chinese pale celadon circular openwork jade box, the pierced cover carved with a long-tailed crested pheasant looking back amongst flowering prunus branches and intricately serrated-edge leaves, all encircled by an archaic-style dragon border, repeated on the box base.
5 1/2 inches, 13.8cm diameter.
Ming dynasty, circa 1600.

- Sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong in their auction of Fine Jade Carvings and Jadeite Jewellery, 16th May 1990, lot 422, purchased by Marchant.
- Sold by Marchant to an English private collector, 10th March 1993.
- This openwork box and cover is an incredible work of art. The style of the main medallion, with its serrated-edge leaves, takes its inspiration from the late Song dynasty to the early Ming dynasty carved jade plaques, which were often used as three pieces from a sceptre.
