Provenance & Additional Information

  • Included by Christie’s London, 8-9th December 1986, lot 430.
  • Formerly in an English private collection.
  • Sold by Sotheby’s London in their auction of China/5000 Years, 19th May 2023, lot 213.
  • The technique used in this vase, applying the celadon, underglaze blue and white, and white slip was a technical feat and was only seen during the Kangxi period. The potters and artist suffered many difficulties due to the different temperatures required to fire the respective colours and layers, and this led to many firing faults such as burst bubbles, flaws and misfiring. This particular example is very rare, particularly because of the meiping shape which is seldom found with this technique.
