Description

Chinese imperial porcelain celadon-glazed deep bowl with flared rim, carved on the exterior with six camellia flowers on a continuous scrolling branch with leaves, covered overall with a luminous celadon glaze, extending on the interior and base.

The base with a six-character mark of Yongzheng within a double ring in underglaze blue and of the period, 1723-1735.

8 3/4 inches, 20.3 cm diameter.

Provenance & Additional Information

  • From the collection of Carl Gimbel (1881-1946), professor at the Imperial University of Beijing 1910-1928, awarded the rank of Mandarin of the Third Degree, District Manager of Salt Taxes 1913-1918.
  • A similar bowl from the collection of Edward T. Hall, Oxford, inventory number 541, was included by Marchant in their Recent Acquisitions catalogue, 2001, no. 12, p. 12; another from the collection Ira and Nancy Koger was sold by Sotheby’s New York in their auction of Important Chinese and Korean Ceramics from the Collection formed by Ira and Nancy Koger, 27th November 1990, lot 29, and was included by Marchant in their Recent Acquisitions catalogue, 2008, no. 35, pp. 80/81.
  • This bowl forms part of a group of celadon wares that were specifically ordered by the Yongzheng Emperor under the supervision of Tang Ying (1686-1756).
