Description

Large Chinese spinach jade double trunk spill-holder, naturalistically carved with a standing crane and a standing phoenix bird amongst openwork branches of pine and prunus in high relief, above further branches of bamboo and lingzhi fungus, the underside also naturalistically carved as a gnarled trunk.

Early Qianlong, circa 1740.

In good condition. A tiny nicks to some branches.

  • Sold by Sotheby’s London in their auction of Fine Chinese Ceramics, Jades and Works of Art, 6th December 1994, lot 81.
  • Formerly in an English private collection, East Anglia
  • A similar example in the Gugong is illustrated by Zheng Xin Miao in Compendium of Collections in the Palace Museum, Vol. 8, no. 185, p. 226.
  • The carving on this vase is extremely clever, particularly in the way the gnarled branches and tree trunk.
