Provenance & Additional Information
- Purchased by Richard Marchant circa 1965.
- Included by P. Marchant in a lecture given to the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, 23rd November 1976 titled Some Interesting Pieces of Marked Ch’ing Porcelain, Bulletin of the Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, no. 3, 1977-1978, no. 27, one on the right, beside a Qianlong version; no. 28 (enlargement); no. 30, same bowl on the right. R. P. Marchant compares a Qianlong example, stating that the white glaze is much finer in Yongzheng and the design is both bolder and more creative in Yongzheng: “One could say that in every feature the Yung-cheng piece surpasses the Ch’ien-lung example”.
- Another example was sold by Christie’s Hong Kong in their auction of The Imperial Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 28th May 2014, lot 3440, p. 282.
- A Qianlong example was included by Marchant in their exhibition of Qing Mark and Period Monochromes and Enamelled Wares, 1981, 38; a pair of Qianlong bowls of this pattern exhibited at the National Museum of History, Taipei, were included by Marchant in their exhibition of Important Chinese Porcelain from Private Collections, 2012, no. 45, pp. 102/3; another Qianlong example in the Hong Kong Museum of Art is illustrated by Christina Chu in The Wonders of the Potter’s Palette. Qing Ceramics from the Collection of the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Hong Kong, 1984, no. 77, pp. 126/7.
- Bamboo, zhu, is evergreen with a straight exterior and hollow culm, symbolising humility and It exemplifies integrity for it bends in a storm but does not break. The joints, jie, are already present inside the shoot before it emerges from the ground; the word “joints”, jie, has the same sound and character as “moral integrity”, jie. It is one of the Three Friends of Winter and an important symbol of peace.
