Description

Chinese imperial porcelain blue and white “lotus bouquet” dish with gently rounded sides rising from a short tapering foot to a slightly everted rim, painted in rich cobalt-blue tones to the interior with a roundel enclosing a ribboned bouquet of lotus flowers, aquatic plants and a lotus pod, encircled by three concentric rings, the cavetto and exterior painted with seven alternating flowerheads amidst scrolling foliage, all below a classic scroll band.

The base with a six-character seal mark of Qianlong in underglaze blue and of the period, 1736-1795.

Provenance & Additional Information

 

  • Formerly in the collection of Dr Vincent Squilla (1925 – 2017).

Vincent Squilla was a well-known physician from New Rochelle, New York. He was a devoted husband for 69 years and proudly served as a medic in WWII with the 71st Infantry Regiment.

  • A smaller Yongzheng example of identical pattern is illustrated in the catalogue of The Special Exhibition and Show of Chinese Antiques and Works of Art, sponsored by Chinese Arts and Crafts, Hong Kong Ltd, April 1981, no. 55, p. 23.
  • A Daoguang example, from the collection of Mrs. Walter Sedgwick, was included in the Oriental Ceramic Society exhibition of The Arts of the Ch’ing Dynasty, Transactions of the Oriental Ceramic Society, 35, 1963-64, no. 125, plate 47, p. 58.
