Description
A superb Chinese celadon glazed thinly potted deep bowl, carved on the interior and exterior with the flowers of the four seasons, lotus, camellia, chrysanthemum and peony on a scrolling continuous leafy branch, the well of the interior with a single tree-peony issuing from rockwork amongst large leaves, the foot carved with a band of key-fret, covered overall in an even rich celadon glaze.

- Formerly in an important Japanese private collection of a brewing family in the Kansai province.
- Purchased from Hata, Kobe.
- A similar bowl from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chia is illustrated by Julian Thompson in “Chinese Celadons, the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Chia”, Arts of Asia, November-December 1993, fig. 18, p. 70, and was then sold by Sotheby’s Hong Kong in their auction of An Important Private Collection of Chinese Celadons and Other Ceramics, 5th November 1996, lot 634, estimate 4-500,000, sold HKD $450,000, where it notes another similar bowl in the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo is illustrated in Chinese Ceramics in the Idemitsu Collection, Tokyo, 1987, pl. 604.
- A related bowl with a flared rim, also with key-fret on the foot rim and similarly fired on a single iron-red burnt ring on the base, in the Palace Museum, Beijing is illustrated by Wangyao and Qionghua in Longquan of the World: Longquan Celadon and Globalisation, vol II, no. 164, p. 282; a larger bowl of similar deep form carved with flowers on both the interior and exterior is illustrated by Regina Krahl and John Ayers in Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum Istanbul, Vol. I, no. 487, colour p. 230, and p. 358, where it notes the bowl was exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts 1935-36.
- The form and quality of this bowl is typical of the Yongle/Xuande period.

£22,000Large Swatow deep circular dish painted in turquoise, black, iron-red and green enamel with gently everted rim, painted in the centre with a barefoot artist wandering in a landscape holding a branch supporting a long-tailed bird, with a rucksack of scrolls and gourd, a further rolled scroll sits on an easel extending from his rucksack, all beside a deer, rockwork, bamboo and beneath a large chrysanthemum, encircled by a lappet band of flowers and branches, the cavetto painted with four large lobed reserves, two with birds perched amongst aster and camellias and two with lotus flowerheads, all between chilong dragon roundels on an iron-red diaper ground of cash and cross-hatch, the underside plain, the base and foot rim with sand grit.

£25,000Chinese ceramic green and amber glazed ingot-form pillow, zhen, moulded on the four sides with a quatrefoil reserve depicting four fish on an aquatic leaf ground, all reserved on an interlaced floral diaper ground within incised borders, the plain flat ends incised with a stylised flowerhead and a green glazed cross on an amber ground, one end pierced for the firing, the other with three original spur marks.
7 inches, 17.7 cm long; 4 inches, 10.2 cm high.
