Description
A Chinese pale celadon and russet jade carving of a standing figure of Yan Ci wearing a deer- skin and holding a milk pail and a branch of lingzhi fungus.
6.5 cm high.

- Formerly in a private French collection.
- Yan Ci donned a deer-skin in order to mingle with a herd of deer, which would enable him to obtain doe’s milk as a cure for his parents’ eye disease. The story exemplifies filial piety. The spine with white speckles, high relief horns and stars on the pelt are particularly distinctive and skilfully rendered.
