Provenance & Additional Information

  • Property of a private English collection.
  • Formerly in a private French collection.
  • Yan Ci donned a deer-skin in order to mingle with a herd of deer, which would enable him to obtain doe’s milk as a cure for his parents’ eye disease. The story exemplifies filial piety. The spine with white speckles, high relief horns and stars on the pelt are particularly distinctive and skilfully rendered.
