Description

Chinese Blanc de Chine seated figure of Guanyin on a reed mat with long flowing robes, resting her right hand on her raised right knee and holding a scroll in her left hand, the tip of her right foot exposed, wearing a lingzhi and ruyi-head jewelled necklace and a ruyi-head tiara, her hair neatly tied at the top with a hairpin, covered overall in an even, luminous pale cream glaze.

Dehua, Fujian Province.

  • A related Guanyin in similar pose, also seated on a reed mat and wearing a similar necklace and with identical hair features, is illustrated by Wang Yamin and Huang Weiwen in Dehua Wares Collected by the Palace Museum I, no. 38, pp. 124/5; another with her hair covered with a cowl was included by Marchant in their exhibition of Blanc de Chine, 2014, no. 42, p. 71; another similar example was sold by Christie’s London in their auction of Important Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art, 4th June 1973, lot 168.
  • A further example with her hands hidden beneath her robes was included by Marchant in their exhibition of Blanc de Chine, 2006, no. 13, p. 28/9; a related Guanyin with similar glaze was sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet in their auction of The Edward T. Chow Collection, Part Three, Ming and Qing Porcelain and Works of Art, 19th May 1981, lot 462.
